MEAC's USDE Recognition

MEAC is recognized by the United States Department of Education as both a programmatic and institutional accrediting body for direct-entry midwifery education throughout the United States.

MEAC is a programmatic and institutional accreditor throughout the United States for direct-entry midwifery educational institutions and programs conferring degrees and certificates, including programs offered via distance learning.

MEAC must be reviewed by and demonstrate compliance with the Secretary of Education's Criteria for Recognition every five years. MEAC's Board of Directors and Accredited Members value this process as an opportunity for improvement and meaningful change.

2021
Recognition renewed

MEAC's recognition was last renewed in 2021 and awarded the maximum recognition period of five years.

2024
Petition submitted

MEAC submitted its new petition for renewal in February 2024, along with supporting documentation for USDE review.

2025
Staff recommendation

The USDE reviews the submitted petition and sends its final staff recommendation to NACIQI for consideration.

2026
NACIQI appearance

MEAC will appear before the National Advisory Committee on Institutional Quality and Integrity (NACIQI) in Winter 2026 to present and answer questions.

Senior Official decision

The Department's Senior Official will make a final decision on renewal following the NACIQI meeting.
